Still a Son of a Bitch

Florida punk band Wolf-Face recently returned from South by Southwest, which gave me cause to finally give their 2013 release, Still a Son of a Bitch, a spin. The band relies on gimmicks for their stage show – they basically all perform as Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf with masks and matching yellow uniforms – but this is just entertaining showmanship. The album proves they also have the chops for high-energy, grizzled pop punk, especially on anthemic album closer “What Are You Looking at Dicknose.” The accompanying video for “I Wanna Be a Homo (Sapien)” is as gold as their sweatbands, speeding up old ’80s workout videos to force fitness nuts to fall in line with their rapid, classic punk melodies. Bonus: They borrow “I Am a Girlfriend” from similarly costumed freak performer Nobunny.
