Restaurant Details

Something was bugging me. Every time I drove by Detroit Joe's – which bills itself as an "original Coney Island restaurant" – I couldn't figure out what a New York amusement park has to do with Auto City, U.S.A. So I decided to ask the waitress when I visited the downtown diner.

She patiently explained that Coney Island is a style of food – kind of like Philly cheese steaks or Buffalo wings – that's popular in Michigan. Go figure. So I tried the "famous Coney hot dog," a hot dog-chili-mustard-onion combo that made me reach for an antacid later on. I thought that the marinated chicken gyro ($4.50) was much tastier. Detroit Joe's also does salads, light entrees, sandwiches and breakfasts.

Ever try a chili omelet? Must be another one of those Coney Island thangs.
