It's widely accepted that the key ingredient to great bagels is New York City tap water, so Scott and Laura Stein, owners of the Delish New York Bakery on Sand Lake Road, brought some of that Big Apple H2O to Orlando. Granted, the water comes inside frozen parboiled bagels, but when the ring rolls are finished off in Delish's ovens, the result is exemplary, toasted or not. Schmear on a little of Laura's homemade plain, reduced-fat or veggie cream cheese (made with carrots, radishes and green onions), and you won't regret it. Lox, naturally, is also available, and seems to be a favored choice among ex-Noo Yawkas craving a little hometown comfort. But for many others, it's the cookies, cakes and assorted pastries that lure them into the spartan, cavernous bakery.

'You get people satisfied with food,â? says Laura, a former personal chef, 'but you get them really happy with pastries,â? and that sentiment rang true for me after biting into a towering cream puff ($2.49). And a chocolatey eclair ($3.29). And a cannoli ($2.49). The German chocolate cupcake ($3.49) combined the pleasant essence of walnuts with coconut, while a wide array of cookies from Long Island's Silver Lake Cookie Company are the bakery's bread and butter. A handful of lunchtime bagels are also offered; look for pizza bagels to be added to the menu in the coming months. Of course, at an authentic New York bakery, you can expect authentic New York prices, but the delish baked goods make it worth the cost. So fuhgeddaboudit.
