OK, we admit it: We’ve picked the Maitland Art Center’s Friday-night art party as a Selection many times. But this month they’ve truly outdone themselves, continuing the museum’s general upward trend (the National Historic Landmark status, the prestigious Dalí exhibit, the fresh remodel of the Germaine Marvel Building). This party marks the opening of a major display of large-format photos by Clyde Butcher, one of America’s foremost nature photographers, known as the “Ansel Adams of the Everglades.” The evening also features several installations scattered throughout the grounds by Michael Covello, Danielle DeGuglimo, local makers’ club Factur, Jill Taffet (a Sarasota-based GIF and video artist) and Nathalie Chikhi (a favorite of ours since her Twelve21 Gallery show in 2011). Music is provided by the Pauses, a local band that would be worth the price of admission even if you didn’t get to see all this art too, and refreshments are available from the uber-popular 4 Rivers Smokehouse. Add in readings, films, hands-on printmaking and drinks, and you’ve got yourself a Friday night anyone can enjoy.
