Best Reason to Look Straight Up

Tom McGrath’s ceiling at the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., 844-513-2014,

Brooklyn conceptual artist Tom McGrath made the glowing artwork that hangs above patrons in the Pugh Theater – 34 back-lit panels hand-painted, screened, sprayed, spattered and brushed on architectural polymer. According to the artist, the wild vortex of imagery encompasses “silkscreens of brushstrokes and splatters that I made and photographed, vector meshes of flight maps for Orlando and major central Florida airports, Judson Theater dancers, breakdancers … a distorted sample of the painting ‘Victory Over the Sun’ by Lissitzky, a Tiepolo engraving, a hypercube section, a diagram of the entire Internet, a painting of a cloud by Constable” and more. Please just remember to stop staring at the ceiling when the performers hit the stage.
