Back in January, in our annual review of the latest Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus tour, we asked if it was time to leave “innocent enjoyment” of performing elephants in the past, and called on Ringling to turn their pachyderms into “corporate icons instead of current employees.” Less than two months later, the circus announced that they would phase out their elephants, retiring them all to a Polk County conservation center by 2018. Not saying that Ringling’s owners at Feld Entertainment read this paper, but … you’re welcome, Jumbo.
