Orlando holiday events guide 2017

A few of the best events coming to Orlando this balmy holiday season

The holidays are always a weird time in Florida. We lack the traditional chill our northern cousins are privy to (in so many ways). You’re more likely to spend Thanksgiving in shorts and flip-flops than your favorite jacket or scarf. And we’re convinced that anyone throwing an “Ugly Christmas Sweater” party down here is just trying to spice things up by getting people to start taking off their sweaters in sticky discomfort halfway through the party. If you’ve got friends or family visiting during the holidays, there are a few options around that’ll get you in the holiday spirit. Take them down to Touristan to hit up Icebar (8967 International Drive, icebarorlando.com) and drink shots while surrounded by more than 70 tons of carved ice. Or make the trip out to the Christmas post office (23580 E. Colonial Drive, 407-568-2941) to get your holiday cards to the rest of the family postmarked from there. Or, if you want to focus on the “spirit” part of the holiday spirit, spend some time downtown at Frosty’s Christmastime Lounge (50 E. Central Blvd., frostys-orlando.com), which wages its own little War on Christmas – at least the religious origins of it – 365 days a year with over-the-top decorations, holiday tunes and alcoholic snowcones.

Of course, even if we can’t ever get the weather quite right, Central Floridians step up with countless holiday markets, special dinners, Nutcrackers and Christmas Carols. You’ll find all of those in the pages below. But you’ll also find a guide to the best concerts, comedy shows, plays and other events. Because even though the holidays take over most of our lives for the next month and a half, it doesn’t mean Orlando stops doing what it does best.
