A big-mac attack of another kind

Whole grains, vegetables and tofu may not sound so exciting, but in the hands of a skilled chef you'd be surprised. Macrobiotic meals are being embraced by more and more chefs, from Chamberlin's to Park Plaza Gardens. Macrobiotics is a cooking philosophy that emphasizes eating in harmony with nature to promote long life, and Harriett's Kitchen (644-2167), a whole-foods cooking school in Winter Park, offers a variety of how-to classes.

Mario Martinez, a chef instructor at Disney Institute, teaches a session on "Tapas" on Monday, Feb. 15. In March, classes explore macrobiotic spins on Cuban, Thai, Turkish and Mexican cuisines. And there's macrobiotic "Cooking to Please a Woman" on Feb. 25. A nine-session "Getting Started" series starts Feb. 27. The cost is about $20-$35 per class and includes dinner.
