UCF will resume classes on Sept. 18

To give students time to get back on campus after Hurricane Irma, the University of Central Florida delayed resuming classes until Monday, Sept. 18.

The university says it made the decision after hearing from students who might have a hard time getting back to Orlando because of the heavy traffic and limited flights. UCF faculty and staff will have to report to work by Friday, Sept. 15, though they can call a supervisor if they anticipate they can't return by that time.

"Our state has endured a powerful storm and stressful time," UCF President John C. Hitt said in a statement. "I thank the essential university personnel and student resident assistants who worked during the storm. I remind our community that patience, compassion and gratitude will go a long way in the busy and challenging days ahead."

UCF opened its residence halls to students on Monday, and the school says food service at 63 South and Knightro's will resume Tuesday. Currently, 1,000 troops with the National Guard are also using the Spectrum Stadium as a staging area for operations.

Aside from closing the main campus last week, UCF also closed the Rosen College at the Lake Nona campus and the Center for Emerging Media in downtown Orlando. Regional UCF campuses will follow the re-openings ordered by their host state college.
