Teen breaks Florida record with 68 pound flathead catfish

13-year-old Charles Patchen reeled in a record-setting flathead catfish last weekend that was about his same size. 

Along with his step-father Bryan Atwell, the teen from Alabama reeled in the state-record with the 63.8 pound flathead catfish on the Chattahoochee River last Sunday at 2:30 p.m, beating the previous record by eight pounds, according to FWC.

The self-proclaimed 'catfish master' used a Zebco 33 fishing pole with a 14 pound test line and bluegill for bait. Patchen held the line for two hours as Atwell guided the boat, attempting to wear the fish out. After the second time Patchen's bait was hit, he started to think the hook was stuck on something underwater and asked for help.

“I grabbed the pole from him, gave it a couple tugs and the fish took off,” Atwell told the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation. “I handed the pole back to Charles and said, ‘GET ‘EM!’”

Once Patchen reeled it in, the catfish had to be rolled into the boat because it was too large for their net.

The catfish weighing a whopping 63 pounds was 48.03 inches in total length, with a girth of 35.43 inches.

The previous state record was caught on the Yellow River in 2011 weighing 55 pounds, according to FWC.
