Wendell Joyner was trying to save his three dogs from his burning home Wednesday when Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested him for ignoring firefighters' commands, WKMG News 6 reports.

Joyner escaped from the house fire, which apparently started in his television, and realized his dogs were still inside. Brevard County Fire Rescue, who responded to the scene, say Joyner kept going in the burning house to look for his dogs.

Eventually Joyner grabbed a firefighter's ax and threw it through the front window to get access to his pets. Deputies tackled him, telling WKMG News 6 they thought Joyner was intoxicated and feared what he would do with the ax.

"My defense is — I was trying to save my dogs," Joyner tells the TV station.

Firefighters eventually saved Joyner's dog, and he was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
