We were informed this morning that the estate of local jazz legend Sam Rivers, who passed away in 2011, is
going up for sale this weekend in Apopka. This is sad news for fans of the acclaimed player and composer, as many would like to see Rivers' collection of instruments and jazz memorabilia kept together for posterity. Although the various furniture and yard equipment that accompanies most estate liquidations comprise the bulk of the sale, some of Rivers' own instruments, awards, and even his trademark bucket hat are up for grabs.
While we admit to a certain excitement over the opportunity to scrounge through the Grammy-nominee's personal record collection, we're hoping that a jazz preservationist with more money than us can swoop in and keep Rivers' legacy from being broken up.
The sale takes place 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Aug. 21-22, at 3857 Old Dunn Road, Apopka.
