While the Willard Grant Conspiracy are another group considered a 'collectiveâ? (members freely come and go and its numbers are similar to those of a small summer camp), the musical vision is kept on much tighter watch than similarly inclusive operations. Leader Robert Fisher approaches things as the Nick Cave/Mark Lanegan figure, writing extensive lyrical treaties that are then orchestrated to sound like a decadent European classical ensemble who've stumbled upon the meaning of rock & roll. Let It Roll was recorded mostly in a week's time in Ljubljana, Slovenia, by Fisher's European backing group, and overdubbed contributions from other longtime members unable to make the trek were added. Overdoses of sawing violins, violas and mandolins and excessive lengths make nearly every song an epic last stand where Fisher is, meanwhile, sitting down expounding on his notes like a nutty professor. Double-bill these folks with the Tindersticks and the concept of the endless night would be realized.
