Transforming an overused drum break into a hit is no small feat. Toronto-based Trinidadian MC/producer/singer K-Os commences play on his third full-length, Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, with a much-trafficked B-boy beat, but 'Electrik Heat ' The Seekwill,â? in its fast-burning cuts and lifting choruses, is a worthy opener nonetheless. The album's sleek surface, as provided by K-Os and session musicians (including Broken Social Scene members) who lay down guitar, violins, and just about everything else, overshadows what the MC is delivering, if it's much at all. K-Os is obviously a multitalented professional, but distinctive arrangements like the frenetic guitar licks and swooping strings in 'The Rain,â? upstage his often unfocused verses, a distraction he doesn't need. But it's not all a struggle: K-Os rides another familiar beat on 'Cat Dieselâ? and soars confidently over pizzicato strings, with solid, vivid imagery and even some linear rhymes.
