In the Olivia Tremor Control divorce settlement, OTC co-founder Bill Doss got the rose-colored sunglasses and oversize smiley-face pin for his Sunshine Fix, while W. Cullen Hart scored the black hooded robe, walking staff and sack of laced hashish for his Circulatory System. The jigsaw-puzzle Green Imagination indicates that mood-sustaining genius Hart and his disciples may have gotten the better end of the deal. More stripped down than 2001's Age of the Sun, Imagination doles out more of Doss's unflaggingly "carpe diem" stance, Sesame Street bass bomps and '60s-esque vocal harmonizing. Doss tries on so many genre frocks from the OTC-lite of "What Do You Know" to the disembodied New Age of "Innerstates" to "Face the Ghost," which somehow commingles country skronk and a strained Prince falsetto that while it's easy to admire his unknown-until-now writing range, it's equally difficult to appreciate these parts as a cohesive, transporting whole.
