Comprising a few tracks by London DJ trio Chicken Lips among several remixes from other artists such as Jellybean, Colourbox (!), Nina Hagen and Sharon Redd, "DJ Kicks" definitely resonates with retro. This installment of the !K7 series opens with psychedelic rock-twinged dance by Brainticket and continues with flashbacks to the '70s and '80s. Track 9, one of Chicken Lips' own, is an entirely groovalicious instrumental of beat, bass and synth. That leads into the "nü-disco" Larry Levan Mix of Gwen Guthrie's "Seventh Heaven." Later, The Raincoats' -- The Raincoats! -- "Animal Rhapsody" is almost the type of thing you'd expect to hear on a '70s cop-show soundtrack. Bracing its backward glances with riveting new beats, DJ Kicks ultimately manages to come off as undeniably fresh.
