Review - Namaquadisco

Artist: Hawke

San Francisco's Hardkiss Brothers (Gavin, Robbie and Scott) seem to exist in a parallel universe with Orlando's Eighth Dimension crew (Q-Burn, DJ BMF, Pimp Daddy Nash). Both camps produce an intelligent array of electronic dance music and have become known for a feel good vibe. Hawke -- the nom de guerre of Gavin Hardkiss -- fits right into Orlando's sun-kissed atmosphere.

By skewing psychedelia with a sly sense of humor, Gavin, along with a slew of guests, shows he knows a thing or two about pop-song deconstruction. On "Namaquadisco," shimmering textures, house beats and dub basslines take you to a happier place. Live elements (guitar, drums) and vocals on several of the tracks provide a surprisingly loose experience. For a small taste, try the track, "Colombo's Got Sloweye," which bounces a spliced-up bass groove against piano fragments and spicy electro-tones.

The Hardkiss Brothers have always represented the San Francisco scene well. Gavin's "Namaquadisco" piques my curiosity even further. Anyone know a good travel agent?
