Hearty slice of baking tradition

The art of Old World bread making is alive and well. The next time you crave carbohydrates, head over to Olde Hearth Bread Company in Casselberry (in the Gooding's shopping plaza at State Road 436 and Red Bug Lake Road, 834-8881).

There you'll find fresh Irish-potato-chive bread and Mediterranean kalamata-olive loaves, plus dozens of other choices, priced from $2.49 to $6. These are "European artisan breads," a fancy way of saying they include all-natural ingredients. Each loaf is baked in a stone deck Pavailler oven. The result is a super-moist bread with a crispy crust.

For breakfast you can choose scones and shortbreads. For lunch or dinner, sandwiches are priced in the $5 range. The "Mediterranean" features a baguette stuffed with salami, prosciutto, artichokes, provolone, sweet peppers and balsamic vinaigrette.
