Police Beat

Jan. 12

(2010-19106) 10:02 p.m.: At Miracle of Love church on West Colonial Drive, someone used the miracle of physics to break a glass door with a fire extinguisher. Yea, verily, a Dell desktop computer was taken up.

Jan. 13

(2010-20373) 2 a.m.: And you know they bought it to fend off thieves: Somebody stole an AR-15 rifle and 10-round magazine from a car trunk at Camden Landings on Landtree Place, along with a stereo and some electronics.

(2010-20463) 2 a.m.: Strolling home from a nearby bar, a woman walking through apartments in the 3400 block of Soho Street was pushed into a breezeway and robbed by a man and a woman, but the victim was too drunk to remember many details.

(OCSD) 3:52 p.m.: In the 10 block of East 13th Street, an 11-year-old accidentally shot his 10-year-old cousin in the tongue.

(2010-20986) 10:25 p.m.: On a thirsty evening in the 1000 block of East Jefferson Street, a passer-by ducked into an open garage and "removed beer." The brew's owner and his friends chased the guy down and held him for the cops.

(2010-22290) 3 p.m.: Little bits of the recession protrude from police reports. The owner of an empty building in the 1600 block of Edgewater Drive said someone had popped the latch on the back door and set up housekeeping with a mattress and food — for the fourth time in eight months.

(2010-22989) 10:55 p.m.: Wait, what? A man in a red hoodie and shorts had a handgun, but when he cornered a woman in a stairwell at The Places at Millenia on Millenia Boulevard, "attempted to rob" was the best he could do?

Jan. 15

(2010-23143) 12:44 a.m.: A guy with a silver handgun took a woman's purse in front of CVS Pharmacy on Edgewater Drive. No word on whether it matched his belt.

(OCSD) 8:30 p.m.: Several men were "hanging out in the backyard" in the 800 block of Sunniland Drive. Two others, waving guns, came up and demanded money. One of the locals refused, so the bandits shot three of them. One later died.

(2010-24660) 8:57 p.m.: How to overdo a simple mugging: A guy was walking down Stonewall Jackson Road near Yucatan Drive, holding a bottle of beer. A man stopped him, fired three shots in the air, hit him on the head with his own drink and took $630. Then the mugger took off in a white Honda with a rear spoiler, chauffeured by a woman.

(2010-25625) 9:30 p.m.: Some backward thief failed to steal food or other big stuff from T.G.I. Friday's on South Semoran Boulevard, but did take off with a security camera and chain lock.

(2010-24998) 11:55 p.m.: A man went to Nassau Bay Apartments on North Orange Blossom Trail in the middle of the night to buy "an unknown item from Craigslist" from a woman. She took him behind a building, where a waiting man robbed him at knifepoint, taking his wallet and credit cards. Don't let the wrong head do the thinking, guys.

(2010-25580) 10:17 a.m.: At Passage to India restaurant on International Drive, somebody used a hand saw to make his own passage to food — cutting a hole in the walk-in cooler, dropping the saw and departing with munchies.

(2010-26108) 6:48 p.m.: Starting at the corner of West Concord Street and North Westmoreland Drive, a man was "held against will for $350." Police found him two blocks away at the 7-Eleven on West Colonial Drive and arrested two on kidnapping charges.

A man was arrested at Harrison's, matching at least one description from another victimized location.

Jan. 17

(2010-27478) 4 p.m.: A .45-caliber handgun disappeared from a house in the 8200 block of Sommerville Drive — the second burglary there in just over four months.

Jan. 18

(2010-29627) 11:47 p.m.: Police tried to stop a car on South Semoran Boulevard, but the man kept going, "driving erratically" and running the light at Curry Ford Road. The officer said he broke off the chase as they approached the intersection with Lake Margaret Drive, but the driver ran that light too — and smashed into another car, killing a 42-year-old man. Afterward, police found the erratic driver had been carrying 5.9 grams of pot, half a gram of cocaine and a 9 mm pistol stolen from Volusia County.
