  • Bob Marley - A Tribute to Freedom

CityWalk at Universal Orlando, 6000 Universal Blvd. West

The King of Reggae's open-air Kingston home has been resurrected. Live bands wail in the courtyard, while the laid-back bar staff serves up Red Stripe, rum concoctions and jerk sandwiches. It's one of the smaller CityWalk venues and weekends are frequently jammed and jammin'.

Teaser: The king of reggae's open-air Kingston home has been resurrected for the real Rasta experience (sans ganja, natch). • Cricketers Pub and Eatery

    7563 Sand Lake Road West

    (407) 730-2111; (407) (FAX)

Chow down on a plate of bangers and mash or fish and chips at Cricketers Arms in Festival Bay Mall. This deceivingly authentic English pub has a selection of 15 imported beers and features nightly entertainment by many local acts.
Teaser: There are 'footballâ? games on the 'telly,â? draft ale flowing freely and traditional English bar rags on the bar. But the music is of the local singer-songwriter type and the crowd is mostly local. That's not to say you can escape the tourists, but in this friendly atmosphere, they're likely the type you don't mind bumping into.

  • House of Blues

Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista Disney

    407-934-2583

To celebrate their third birthday, House of Blues has strayed a bit from its Southern menu, introducing dishes that might be based on Delta traditions but have taken a few detours.

First, some HOB dining secrets. After listening to the "30-minute wait" speech and getting a beeper from the hostess, you should stroll around back to the Voodoo Garden. It overlooks the lake, there's live music, and – best of all – there's often an empty table. Second: The Voodoo Garden music ends at 10 p.m., when it becomes a very peaceful place to dine. The last secret? Order extra rosemary corn bread – even at $3.95 – since it's moist, crunchy and satisfying.

The staple "seafood gumbo" ($3.95 a cup) has a flavorful soup base, which takes a lot of concentration to notice, since the slightly burnt taste of blackened seasonongs masks everything. With almost none of the promised ingredients showing up (andouille sausage, shrimp, oysters and crawfish are listed, but you couldn't prove it by me), it's not the enjoyable dish it could be.

Options for appetizers include "Caribbean jerk chicken wings in Pickapepper sauce" ($8.95) and "seared Gulf shrimp with Blackened Voodoo Beer" ($10.25). For the latter, six decent-sized shrimp come coated in a dark, spicy sauce, the deep flavor accented by a mound of radish sprouts. It's a good precursor of the interesting combinations of textures and flavors to follow.

For the "ahi tuna salad" ($10.95), rare slices of quickly seared tuna are wound around a heap of red cabbage and topped in a drizzle of wasabi mayonnaise. The fish is sushi-grade and splendid, and while the cabbage is a bit too oversoyed, the crisp texture offsets the buttery feel of the fish.

Some of the so-called "Southern specials" come from South Elsewhere. I don't think any bayou cook has ever rustled up a mess of "chicken and penne pasta with wild mushroom cream sauce and Gouda cheese" ($14.95). The "grilled rosemary chicken" ($14.95) comes nicely charcoaled and juicy, along with mashed potatoes that are richly creamy and wonderfully lumpy at the same time, and perfect, tender sautéed asparagus.

Our attentive server recommended the "white chocolate banana bread pudding" (all desserts $5.95). CrÈme anglaise and dark-chocolate drizzles accent the muffinlike pudding, but by the time we got to the car I felt several pounds heavier. Try the "sweet potato cheesecake" for something lighter.

HOB will always be a theme restaurant, but this theme has the food to back it up.

Matador is the best of both worlds: It’s a dark dive with plenty of seating, where you can get an adventurous craft cocktail or just order up your usual drink. The patio is typically jumping after hours, but happy hour is normally chill. It’s almost too easy to order round after round in this well-rounded Ivanhoe watering hole.

    7467 International Drive West

    (407) 352-7892

O'Shucks was voted one of the best karaoke bars in Orlando by the readers of Orlando Weekly. Come enjoy our great casual atmosphere and have fun with the tourists and local hospitality crowd!
Teaser: Despite the tongue-in-cheek name, this is a non-ethnic karaoke bar. It's one of the more popular singing joints on the I-Drive strip, with more crowd enthusiasm then even Big Daddy's near downtown. There's also a separate room with pool tables and video games.
  • One Eyed Jack's

15 N. Orange Ave. Winter Park Area

    (407) 420-1515

The famous boar's head and the very loud sounds emanating from the open door are the signs you've arrived at this sawdust-strewn tavern, which hosts acoustic rock and folk acts throughout the week.
Teaser: One Eyed Jack's and its neighbor, the Loaded Hog, are cut from the same cloth ' a heavy-drinking, loud-music kind of fabric that makes you want to stay up way too late and gives you a pounding headache the next morning ' in a good way.

Locals bands strive to perform on this stage, the one shared with most of the Pitchfork-worthy bands that come through town. It’s a smaller room, which means nine times out of 10, you’re shouting the lyrics shoulder-to-shoulder with similarly impassioned fans.

  • Stardust Video and Coffee

1842 E. Winter Park Road Audubon Park

    407-623-3393

Stardust started life as a video rental place that served coffee and over the years has morphed to serve the changing desires of the community. Among its many functions (work and study spot, café, live music venue, market host) and despite its ramshackle air, the ’dust is prized by anyone looking for a quality buzz. The bartenders of the Slanted and Enchanted Bar (in the big room) are given free rein to come up with inventive craft cocktails; the Scotch Bar (in the smaller room) stocks exquisite bottles; and the bottled beer and cider selection is choice. For many, it’s a home away from home.

  • Underground Bluz - UCF

    12261 University Blvd. East

    (407) 482-4141

Located across the street from UCF, this local beer bar/live music venue has been giving students, professors, and the good-beer-drinking public a haven on the east side of Orlando. Underground Bluz offers close to 130 different beers, with 17 on tap, and has a strict "No crap on tap" policy.
Teaser: The strip mall where you'll find Underground Bluz is like a booze mall. There are no less than four other nightspots, plus a liquor store. But they've got a cozy, hole-in-the-wall vibe, cheap microbrews, live bands and occasional bouts of free beer.

Mid Drive Dive
2401 Edgewater Drive, Orlando
Mid Drive Dive is described as a midcentury-inspired restaurant and bar serving American classics. The concept comes from the longtime tenants at East End Market Matt Hinckley (Hinckley's Fancy Meats) and Jacob Zepf (The Neighbors, Freehand Goods). The menu features American classic snacks, salads, sandwiches and mains. At the bar, guests can dive into simple yet crafty cocktails, plus staple beers and wines.
