MUSIC: Well-curated music festivals, touring national acts and emerging locals make fall the best time to go out and enjoy live music

Janelle Monae, Hard Rock Live
Janelle Monae, Hard Rock Live

Maybe the fall is best loved for pumpkins, but there’s a fat, round lineup of bands coming to town this season that’s making us turn colors too. We’ll be treated to not just today’s most daring (and stunning) pop artist, Janelle Monáe, but also the hugely influential Pointer Sisters will be jumping for our love at Epcot in October. Later that month, Nine Inch Nails come toting that darkwave prince Gary Numan, arriving for a freaky industrial dance party on Halloween night. And did we mention that the noodle-armed Nerdapalooza gets a little more muscle this year, including huge headliner They Might Be Giants?! Add to that Matador darling Kurt Vile, up-and-coming Seattle tropical punk band Week of Wonders and an intimate show at the Acre with John Vanderslice, and we’re tempted to prematurely start puffing our breath to check if maybe, just maybe, the air has cooled already.

Sigur Rós, Julianna Barwick Winter is coming! Nine Inch Nails, Gary Numan We’re not sure which blew our minds more, when the Associated Press embarrassingly printed that Nine Inch Nails covered Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” on this tour or the fact that we get to hear that throbbing wound of a song live on Halloween night. Janelle Monáe It’s rare that a musician makes her debut with a concept album that meets critical acclaim as well as commercial success, but that’s how Janelle Monáe does. And as incredible as The ArchAndroid was, her most recent release is its prequel, and by going back, The Electric Lady is poised to push the concept even further.
