Using court documents, the registry will include people who have been convicted of felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor animal cruelty and will be available on the county website. The intent is to make it easier for animal shelters, as well as those selling pets, to ensure that potential adopters or buyers don't have a history of negligence or abuse.
Volusia County's move follows other counties throughout Florida, including Marion, Osceola, Hillsborough and Leon Counties.
Spectrum News 13 reports that the initiative was ushered in with the help of local animal activist Debbie Darino, who also led the push for the passage of Ponce's Law in Florida, which allows judges to implement lifelong bans on individuals who have been convicted of animal cruelty.
