Announced today by the Paramount Network, Rest in Power: The Travyon Martin Story will debut in July as a six-part documentary series.

The announcement comes on the sixth anniversary of Martin’s death.

Based on Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, the book by Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the program comes in part from executive producer Shawn Carter – the hip-hop mogul commonly known as Jay-Z.

Martin’s death made national headlines in 2012. The 17-year-old unarmed high school student was shot and killed by neighborhood security watch George Zimmerman in Sanford, where Zimmerman lived, and where Martin was visiting his father. Zimmerman, claiming he shot Martin in self-defense, was acquitted of second-degree murder the following year.

The incident, which was met with outrage and protests across the country, helped spur the worldwide “Black Lives Matter” movement. Rest in Power delves into the soul of that story – and the difference his short life made, even posthumously.

Executive producers alongside Carter will include Martin’s parents, Fulton and Martin, as well as Chachi Senior, Michael Gasparro, Jenner Furst, Julia Willoughby Nason and Nick Sandow.

Furst and Nason will serve as co-directors on the film.
