In March, we told you that the I-4 Ultimate Project, which is widening the highway to install four new toll lanes for "express" travel, would result in the closure of parking lots beneath the I-4 overpass downtown. The Florida Department of Transportation wasn't able to say at the time when, exactly, the parking lots would be affected. It could only promise that 25 percent of the spots would remain available for use.
Well, tomorrow is the day those lots are finally going to be out of commission. Here's what FDOT has to say about its plans:
The South Street on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 4 (I-4) and Orlando parking Lot 9 South, located under the I-4 overpass at the southwest corner of Garland Avenue and Pine Street, are scheduled to close the night of Tuesday, July 7.
The permanent ramp closure of the South Street entrance ramp is necessary for the reconstruction of the I-4 interchange at State Road 408, one of Florida’s most heavily traveled. The I-4 Ultimate project team suggests alternate on-ramps at Anderson Street and near the intersection of Garland Avenue and Concord Street.
Lot 9 South, part of the City of Orlando’s parking operations will also be closing for ongoing construction activities. Lot 10, located adjacent to Lot 9, will be partially closed at a later date to be determined. During construction, at least 25 percent of the total parking spaces under I-4 will remain open.
