The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission's Statewide Alligator Harvest Program started Monday, Aug. 15, and will run until Nov. 1.
Those who successfully applied for permits earlier this year will be able to hunt 2 alligators per permit and only in the designated area for each.
The FWC began the program in 1988 after the American Alligator was officially removed from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service's endangered species list, where it had been listed since 1967. The FWC utilizes the alligator harvest as a way to manage the species in the state.
According to WESH, the FWC got 14,307 applications for this year's harvest, only awarding 5,000 licenses. Anyone in the U.S. over 18 years old was allowed to apply.
