Counting on culture

The pot to build her performing arts center still contains a measly few million dollars. But while that project waits in the wings, Mayor Glenda Hood and the Orlando City Council have at least agreed to seed a cultural corridor with tax dollars in hopes that smaller theaters and art galleries will sprout downtown.

Planned spending approved June 28 would pay the first year's rent for up to three theaters and three galleries at sites to be determined. The goal, though, is to create a destination in a proposed three-mile-long corridor that would follow Magnolia Avenue, swerve west to include Carr Performing Arts Center, then snake north on Orange Avenue to capture the existing museums and theaters in Loch Haven Park.
