The Orlando Science Center has been operating without a chief operating officer since the resignation of Capt. Harry L. Smith, Jr., effective March 31. The Orlando Weekly discovered this fact in reporting last week's story on parking problems at Loch Haven Park ("In the park, It's car wars," April 3). Attempting to contact Smith, we discovered a voice mail declaring his resignation. Smith, who previously served as commander of the Service School Command at the Naval Training Center in Orlando, initially offered little in the way of explanation. "I really can't talk about the Science Center," said Smith, who plans to begin looking for another job after taking three weeks to "readjust." "We'd love to stay in Orlando," he said. So better to observe the Code of Silence, thus potentially salvaging his insider status. For her part, Science Center President Sondra Quinn suggested only Smith "has made a really wonderful contribution to the Science Center." One person who won't miss Smith is Linda Chapin, the Orange County Chairman and a Science Center trustee. Not only was Chapin unaware od Smith at all, "I've never heard the name." she said. Maybe they need someone with a higher profile.
