Sunday, August 7Summer Sing

As the season-opening event for Winter Park’s Bach Festival Society, Summer Sing should really be considered the choir’s annual Good Samaritan deed. It’s a day when the community is kindly invited to the grandiose Tiedtke Concert Hall for a singalong with the choir. And with such an open-ended invitation to “all who love to sing,” as the press release says, instead of the gracefully executed ensembles customary of the choir, we can’t help but picture a burble of all-over-the place “do-re-mis” that sound more like an orchestrated tongue-speaking mess. Nevertheless, all are invited – from altos to baritones to whatever the hell you’d call the dying-cat screeches of your drunk Auntie Myrtle around the karaoke machine at Christmas – to join in singing this year’s selections, which includes one of J.S. Bach’s lighter compositions, St. Matthew Passion, and Verdi’s dramatic Requiem, a favorite for Roman Catholic funeral processions. Knock ’em dead, Myrtle! – Aimee Shea (3-4:30 p.m. at Tiedtke Concert Hall, Rollins College, 1000 Holt Ave., Winter Park; free, $8 for music packet; 407-646-2182; bachfestivalflorida.org)
