As the group’s primary musician, Evan Abeele is fond of painting synthesizer sounds in hazy, hypnotic brushstrokes, creating instrumentation that’s the aural personification of a warm but wistful nap. It’s dream-pop at its most apropos, even if it didn’t start that way. Originally, Abeele (a musician) and Denise Nouvion (a photographer) came together to collaborate on an audio-visual project, but after teaming up on an acoustic cover of Jackson Browne’s These Days for kicks, he realized the potential of her soothing, demure voice, and Memoryhouse was born. According to Abeele in an interview with, the Toronto duo originally intended to “make this really beautiful kind of drone music,” but their final product sports a more immediately palatable bend. Although the act’s discography is currently thin, Sub Pop Records has already signed them and re-released the EP The Years, making the saga of Memoryhouse’s birth and gestation an enviably happy fable. – Reyan Ali (with Emily Reo, Maximino; 8 p.m. at Will’s Pub, 1042 N.
