Friday, Nov. 18Florida Classic Battle of the Bands

It’s not that we don’t love college football (despite the Jo Pa drama, mind you). And it’s not that we don’t totally respect the more than 30-year rivalry between the Classic’s two opposing teams – Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman University. It’s the way that certain powerful, altogether energized fan reaction translates from the end of the second quarter to the moment when the band steps onto the 50-yard line at halftime. The Marching Wildcats and Marching 100 (seriously legit!) are the cream of the college-band crop, and that’s why this year the two bands take their Drumline-esque acts over to Amway Center. They’ve also invited a starting lineup of nearly 10 high school marching bands from places like the Bahamas and South Carolina, making for their very own night of rock ’em sock ’em Jock Jams. It’ll start with the quiet tap of the drum and explode into full-on knee-popping, hip-grinding, jump-out-of-your-seat-and-wave-your-hands action. It’ll be hard not to, trust us. – Aimee Vitek (7 p.m. at Amway Center, 400 W. Church St.; $15.75-$27; 800-745-3000;
