Rotation: What local artists are listening to

This week: Beth McKee

“The North Mississippi Allstars’ Keys to the Kingdom is what I’m loving right this minute. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson’s ability to render tracks that sound so raw and unpolished yet utterly complete is incredible and must be a genetic trait. I’ve been a huge fan of their late father Jim Dickinson’s music for many years. “Ain’t No Grave” is an apt tribute to his spirit and his passing. “The Meeting” is a perfect bed for Mavis Staples’ churchy guest vocals and the boys’ version of Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again” is just as southern as it needs to be. Really visceral music full of great ideas.”

(Local Southern-roots artist Beth McKee plays the Plaza Live 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. Admission is $12-$15. Her forthcoming album,Next to Nowhere, is scheduled for release in February.)
