Rotation: What local artists are listening to

This week: Jim Frederick of Sci-Fried

"The album I'm listening to right now is Diamond Eyes by the Deftones. The Deftones have always had their own unique sound. It's kind of like if you put Korn, NIN, David Bowie and Pink Floyd in a blender. Its heavy, dark melodies mixed with haunting harmonies, odd time signatures, abrupt changes and unexpected stops make for quite a wild ride. I think my favorite track on the album is "Prince." It's super dynamic, going from almost a whisper in the verse to heavy, screaming, distorted vocals and guitars in the chorus. It reminds me some of Sci-Fried bassist Sunni's other band, Lunatic Candy Kreep.

(Geek-rockers Sci-Fried's third album, Future Tense, is out this week. Their CD release party is at 7 p.m. Friday, March 25 at A Comic Shop, with guests Marc With a C, Captain Dan & the Scurvy Crew, Krondor Krew, Benjamin Bear, Magitek and Rappy McRapperson with MC Wreckshin.
Admission is free.)
