Rotation: What local artists are listening to

This week: "Shwill" of the Unit Shifters

“Around the holidays, I added Motörhead, Soundgarden, Thin Lizzy, Melvins, Prince and Tom Waits to the rotation in my Jeep. And while I love them all, Waits’ Bad As Me and Soundgarden’s A-Sides have enjoyed almost exclusive occupancy. I love “grunge” music because it combines the best parts of what came before it. A-Sides is a compilation, not a best-of, so it has deep cuts and exclusive tracks spanning their whole career, from the dirty ’87 Sub Pop to the psych post-metal of the mid ’90s, and really shows how amazing they are as a band and individually as musicians. Bad As Me can only be properly described in print by holding down the shift key and running your fingers up and down the numbers. It’s his best record since Bone Machine from 1992. I’ve gone through five copies in three weeks because I keep turning new kids on to it, and if I ever meet someone that doesn’t like it, I’ll slap them for the sake of all mankind.”

The Unit Shifters open for Bright Light Social Hour 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at the Social. Admission is $10-$13. Shwill is also the host of the Shwill Show on WPRK 91.5. Check out tinyurl.com/unitshifters for more on the band.
