Review - Verve Remixed 2/Verve Unmixed 2

Artist: Verve Remixed 2/Verve Unmixed 2

The second installment in Verve's inspired catalog electro-revitalization again employs today's top knob-twiddlers to make pretty messes of already messy jazz standards. Despite what you make of turntable revisionism, it's hard to resist Sarah Vaughan's "Whatever Lola Wants" newly sexed up by the Gotan Project. Similar deconstructive treatment is dished out to Ella Fitzgerald (via Layo & Bushwacka), Ramsey Lewis (by Mr. Scruff) and others, while remaining oddly true to the original sentiments of the songs. For the squeamish, Verve also released an "Unmixed" compendium containing each of the tunes in their original, un-fingered form.
