Review - Up for It

Artist: Keith Jarrett

Though his ego gets massaged most thoroughly as a composer, it's tremendously invigorating to hear a pianist of Keith Jarrett's caliber dig into the canon. With longtime compatriots Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, the on the CD excitement is palpable, amplified I'm sure by the live-in-France-in-July atmosphere. Although it's become somewhat tiring to hear group after group attempt "Autumn Leaves" or "If I Were a Bell" or (for God's sake) "Scrapple From the Apple," in the hands of able players such as these (who are obviously stoked to be freed from Jarrett's highly-structured originals), even warhorses like these come alive.
