Ferocious slide guitar permeates the sultry landscape of Phonoroid's "Too Many Frames," which sounds like it was recorded smack in the middle of a sizzling two-lane blacktop in the Deep South. Singer Vanessa Vassar emotes against a sparse yet inventive backdrop from Axel Manrico Heilhecker's springy guitars and supporting instruments.
The sonorous wail of "Polaroid" contrasts with "Time Flies," a rocker that features otherworldly axe wails and Vassar's reed-thin soprano. "Mario" is an audio sandwich of drums, funky guitar and serpentine bass groove. Vassar's delivery may irritate, but it's perfectly suited for lines like, One step in the orange heat taught me never to tell a lie/ one sting from a green thorn showed me always to admire.
Phonoroid's surreal soundscapes are perfect for a long road trip on a hot day.
