Now that Veruca Salt's Nina Gordon and Louise Post have split up, it's obvious that they tempered each other's extremes. On Veruca's first post-Gordon album, the recent "Resolver," Post short-changed melody for seething, faux-metal rants.
In contrast, Gordon's solo bow, "Tonight and the Rest of My Life," dispenses hook-filled pop that's sweet enough to send listeners to the dentist. Producer Bob Rock works hard to remove all personality from the mix, and the midtempo rhythms rarely give up the rock. But there's some tasty bubblegum amid the flavorless filler. "Number One Camera" is bouncier than Juliana Hatfield's kid sister. "Hold On to Me" is destined to be played at proms until the apocalypse comes. And "Now I Can Die" is so mind-numbingly catchy that it's easy to ignore its codependent lyrics ("He gives me everything and now I can die." ) This is disposable stuff, but that's what guilty pleasures are made of.
