During the mid-'80s, Lone Justice fed on twin appetites for country roots and punky impudence. Proof of this diet's success is heard on "This World Is Not My Home," a sterling retrospective CD. It's impossible to resist singer Maria McKee's gospel-bred wail -- like Janis Joplin with a Tammy Wynette injection -- on "East of Eden," all sin and redemption over a Bo Diddley beat and Benmont Tench's greasy B-3 organ. Ditto for the bawdy "Ways to Be Wicked" and the regretful "Don't Toss Us Away."
Three tracks from the glossier sophomore album "Shelter" also showcase McKee's vocal and songwriting prowess. Their in-concert glory is hinted at on "Sweet Jane" (with U2's Bono), "Sweet, Sweet Baby" and "Wheels." Ron Wood and Bob Dylan add chiming guitars on "Go Away Little Boy," one of three rocking outtakes. Any possibility of a reunion? It's got my vote.
