State of Bengal's Visual Audio album was a stunning if underappreciated gem of the seemingly now-abandoned "Asian Underground" movement. Gently beautiful and insistently funky, it demonstrated a craftsmanship that went missing all too often in the easy-to-ape-hard-to-master genre. Tana Tani – a collaboration with the freakily mystic Das Baul – continues the course laid out on Visual Audio by constructing tracks around Das Baul's singular vocal work. All of the tracks float upon passionately esoteric constructions as evocative of the history of Bengal's Bauls (a marginalized but highly regarded sect known for Tantrism and wild-eyed drum-beating) as they are of the futuristic world in which they were created.
