Review - Smells Like Bleach: A Punk Tribute to Nirvana

Artist: Various artists

Running 12 Nirvana songs through the punk grinder is probably the best way to re-create the thrill of hearing the band for the first time. Kurt Cobain's songwriting sensibilities come through even as the artists take liberties with his arrangements.

There are more high points than low points. Blanks 77's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a piss-and-vinegar, sneering punk rendition complete with two-note guitar solo. Agent Orange's "On a Plain" rings true. Dr. Know and I.C.U thrash out "Aneurysm" and "Dive," and an electric "Something in The Way" by Burning Brides just shines.

All in all, questionable moments are few on "Smells Like Bleach." Flipper's "Scentless Apprentice" is discordantly interesting but lacks push. Dee Dee Ramone has rewritten "Negative Creep" and Vice Squad sings "Lithium" with contempt. An experience Nirvana fans will want to dig into.
