WorkNameSort: Saturday Night Live: The Musical Performances Vol. 1
It has been 25 years since "Saturday Night Live" unleashed its controversial brand of comedy, and music has always been an integral part of the show. The "Musical Performances Vol. 1" -- along with its "Vol. 2" counterpart -- celebrates some of the most memorable "SNL" guests.
This CD offers something for everyone. The disc starts with Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which is one of the best tracks. Other gems include Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You," Annie Lennox's "Why," David Bowie's "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)" and James Taylor's "The Secret O' Life." But Randy Newman's goofy "I Love L.A." seems like an odd choice for a show based so squarely in New York City.
Overall the production is almost flawless, and several cuts manage to capture that certain something that only a live show provides.
