Review - One

Artist: Cursed

Heavy, loud and fast. And there's a goat-headed man-demon in the artwork. Nothing says "metal" like that. Despite the fact that Cursed hails from Canada (maybe that's how they got their name), they generate a potently fresh metal attack that draws from hardcore rage and thudding, doom-metal heaviness. Brash, intelligent lyrics accompanied by drop-D thud and double-time drumming means it's heavier than it needs to be and twice as strong. This whole post-hardcore thing occasionally runs into the same wall that stunted both punk and metal for years; but when a band like Cursed comes along with a blast as skull-busting as "One" (just the creepy, full-speed pummeling of "Polygraph" alone would make this album a keeper), it gives hope for the future. Have I mentioned that it's heavy? And that there's a goat-headed dude inside?
