Buffalo Daughter combines Sonic Youth's noisy art rock, Beck's marriage of hip-hop and folk, and their own original techno experimentations into a woolly patchwork -- all filtered through a Japanese perspective on American pop-culture and kitsch.
The band's breezy soundscapes range from the dissonant rock of "Autobacs" and the title cut to the squelching, pseudo drum and bass of "R&B." Sometimes the experimentation goes a little too far into the kitsch zone. "Great Five Lakes" -- the first single -- bounces a hip-hop beat off of sound bites and cheesy, '70s-Moog synthesizer pop in order to create something that sounds like an annoying jingle. Just be thankful that the song is an anomaly among the unique "new rock" presented here.
