On his debut full-length recording "Monster Breaks," Orlando-based DJ Mot has produced a tweaked-out mix compilation of "big beat" artists (think pounding techno meets hip-hop and rock). For the most part, Mot's block-rocking mix of international big-beat artists like Fatboy Slim, Hardknox and JDS is smooth and imaginative, and his track selection is right-on.
One major exception is Basco's "Rock The Funky Beat," which has a boorish, centerpiece sample that has appeared on far too many records as of late. Redemption comes with Mekon's "Skool's Out," which features a classic hip-hop sample that takes over and rides the mix into the fade-out. Mot's mellower side is represented by the serendipity of Howie B's "Angels Go Bald, Too." His own track, "Bugs, Rocks, and Vampires," makes use of several cool samples, including a funky guitar loop lifted from the underground sexploitation film "Vampyros Lesbos."
Mot's techno-mix "Monster" is a study in the science of breakbeats that will explode current perceptions of the funky-break scene.
