Review - Live at the Mac

Artist: IIIrd Tyme Out

IIIrd Tyme Out were voted Bluegrass Vocal Group of the Year for three straight years by the International Bluegrass Music Association in recognition of their outstanding recorded work. Their new album proves that they can cut it live as well.

Despite the band's acclaim as a vocal group, their instrumental prowess is what sets up the whole shebang. The audience at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, Ky., erupted when the band went into their version of Bill Monroe's classic "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Fiddler Mike Hartgrove and banjoist Steve Dilling gave a crash course in the roots of bluegrass with a blazing rendition of the traditional chops-buster "Little Rabbit."

With nary a band-penned tune in sight, IIIrd Tyme Out has chosen to cover a wide range of bluegrass and gospel masterpieces. Based on this recording, it is awfully hard to fault them.
