Review - Julian "Cannonball" Adderley

Artist: Cannonball Adderley

Signed to an EmArcy contract while still the band director at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale (band geeks, don't abandon hope yet), Cannonball Adderley delivered on expectations with this debut album. Ten songs, three sessions, arranged by Quincy Jones and performed with a lineup that not only included his brother Nat, but also the cream of the mid-'50s New York crop (Max Roach, Paul chambers, J.J. Johnson). Really, there wasn't any way he could have screwed it up. But mixing up standards ("You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to," "The Song Is You") with originals ("Cannonball" is an appropriately explosive opener) proved Cannonball to be a be-bop contender of the highest order.
