From Athens, Ga., by way of Birmingham, Ala., Little Red Rocket plays the kind of lush, catchy guitar rock made popular by the likes of Juliana Hatfield and Elastica. For their second full-length, "It's in the Sound," Rocket has added a harder-charging rhythm section to complement Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor's soaring harmonies and searing guitars, giving the band's sound an edge and heft. That edge really shows on punky rock tunes like the excellent "California" and the organ-infected fuzz of "Sunday Driver."
Rocket also has added some new sounds to their Belly-meets-the-Beatles mix. Piano, trumpet and cello are nice additions to the faux-ska of "I Believe in What You Do," the Middle Eastern psychedelia of "Ocean in the Sky" and the rollicking title track. While not all these songs hit the mark, there are enough catchy choruses and delicious hooks to make this album a great listen.
