Artist: Motorpsycho and Jaga Jazzist Horns

This collaborative EP brings together the glass-eyed atmospheric funk of Jaga Jazzist and the red-eyed space-rock of Motorpsycho, two bands who, despite sharing a Norwegian heritage, have little to do with one another sonically. And, for the majority of this 45-minute EP, the groove of Jaga Jazzist rules the roost. It's not until the end of the fourth proper "song," -- the seven-and-a-half minute Chicago Transit Authority-meets-side-two-of-"Fun House" fuzzbust of "Theme de Yoyo" -- that Motorpsycho really gets a say in the proceedings, ratcheting up the PCP quotient by a factor of 1972. Before that, it's all "Bombay Brassiére" beauty and "Doffen Ah Um" Mingus massacre. Jaga's revenge is had with the final track, a 20-minute lounge dirge titled "Tristano" that was probably twice as boring for these two groups to play as it is for you to listen to. It's unfortunate, given how vibrant and exciting both of these acts are individually, that this EP doesn't get the juices flowing but for a brief moment.
