Review - Haha Sound

Artist: Broadcast

With the majority of the Warp Records catalog being given over to glitchy electronic futurism, the warm, 4AD hum of Broadcast is quite out of place. Yet somewhere within the honey-drenched melodies and the womb-sized Farfisa lines, the strains that link Broadcast to, say, Aphex Twin, start to emerge. Fractured substructures and piled-deep sonic anomalies creep in, buzzing digitalia swoops over the open chords and those honey-drenched melodies start to take on a distinctly "Fifth Element" feel. Yes, Broadcast is still a pop band, and still one that's yet to shake off its Stereolab roots, but perhaps inspired by their labelmates, it's also a band charting a new course for pop loveliness.
