Review - Faking the Books

Artist: Lali Puna

Morr has made it their standard procedure to electrify every type of music on earth in order to test the waters of pop's rather stale outlets. Tied and Tickled Trio's laptops frying jazz and dub together into a greasy mash of exquisite confusion is but one example. Here the folks behind The Notwist adopt the Lali Puna moniker to flip around the laid-back pop of indie rock's '90s malaise for a little fun. The results? An engaging but ultimately unrewarding pop album that might have been contemporary around 1998. The initial tracks show some promise, but the disc gets stuck in repetitive loops instead of the brilliant crosscurrents of influence and effects that mark many of Morr's releases. The lesson? Stick with Stereolab.
